Behind these different schemes is a notion of life as a structured and – to a certain degree – foreseeable process evolving through a fixed sequence of phases and passages that each have a specific meaning and involve particular activities and expectations. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this notion becomes graphic in the popular depictions of staircases marking the different “steps of life.” They arrange the human life course according to the contemporary bourgeois career ladder as a first climbing and then descending curve, and thus devise a whole parkour of stages with their respective statuses and roles, tasks and opportunities (Joerißen and Will 1983) (Fig. 10.1).
